Neurosurgery

Our neurosurgeons are highly qualified with significant experience in all neurosurgical conditions that affect children.

These specialists work in close collaboration with many other pediatric specialty services to ensure your child will receive the comprehensive care they need. We have many well-established, multidisciplinary programs dedicated to treating specific conditions, including the hydrocephalus program, spina bifida program, craniofacial program, and neuro-oncology program.

A Team Approach to Neurosurgery

Neurological conditions are complex, and one specialist working alone is often not enough to adequately treat them. Experience has proven that these conditions are treated much more effectively by multidisciplinary teams. We work with many different departments to ensure each child receives quality care and advice.

Our departments work together to treat a variety of neurological conditions, including:

  • Hydrocephalus – A common condition characterized by excess “brain water” in the head.
  • Congenital issues – Inherited conditions that can include spinal and head problems.
  • Trauma – Serious injury to the brain, nerves, or spine that requires a team-oriented treatment to repair damage.
  • Brain and spinal tumors – As serious as a tumor is, treatment has made great progress in recent years through a team-based approach. Our team includes neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiation specialists, histopathologists, radiologists, specialist nurses, rehabilitation specialists, and palliative care specialists.
  • Epilepsy – Approximately one percent of children are diagnosed with epilepsy, a condition characterized by frequent seizures. Surgery has often proven an effective treatment for children who cannot be treated with medication.
  • Craniofacial disorders – Neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, ophthalmologists, and maxillofacial surgeons often work together to treat deformities of the skull and face.
  • Spine – There are many different kinds of spinal conditions that can affect children and we offer a wide spectrum of services for children with spinal disorders.
