Comprehensive Pediatric Sleep Evaluation
Our Sleep Lab uses advanced technologies, including video and infrared monitoring, to conduct overnight sleep studies (polysomnograms). These studies help identify and assess:
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Central sleep apnea
- Sleep-related breathing disorders
- Neurological sleep disturbances
- Behavioral sleep problems
Children referred to the Sleep Lab often have underlying medical conditions such as enlarged tonsils or adenoids, airway abnormalities, or neurologic concerns. Behavioral issues may also play a role.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
The Sleep Lab works closely with the departments of pulmonology, ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat), and neurology. Referrals from these specialties ensure comprehensive and coordinated care tailored to each child’s needs.
What Happens During a Sleep Study?
Our sleep studies include continuous monitoring of:
- Brain activity (EEG)
- Breathing patterns and airflow
- Heart rate and blood oxygen levels
- Muscle and limb movements
- Body position and nighttime behavior (via video)
A technologist monitors the child throughout the night, using a “Head Box” EEG system and other sensors to gather accurate data for evaluation.
A Child-Friendly Experience
We understand that children may feel anxious about spending the night in a medical facility. That’s why our Sleep Lab is designed to feel like a home environment. We encourage families to bring the child’s favorite bedtime story or comfort item, and one parent is welcome to stay overnight. Female technicians are available to support comfort and privacy for female patients.
Child Life specialists are also involved to provide reassurance and age-appropriate preparation for the sleep study.
Test Results and Follow-Up
After the study, the recordings are reviewed and analyzed by our sleep technologists and interpreted by the physician-led Sleep Lab team. Results and treatment recommendations are discussed with the family during a follow-up appointment.
