Sidra Medicine Partners with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

Sidra Medicine has partnered with the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) to host a joint meeting on “Hot Topics in Obstetrics and Gynecology” from November 30-December 2, 2014. Developed as part of the Sidra Medicine Symposia Series, the leading medical education forum in Qatar, this will be the first time RCOG has supported an event in Qatar. The aim of the symposium is not only to inform and educate the medical community, but to also stimulate a discussion with international experts about the future of obstetrics and gynecology and the profession’s development in the region.

RCOG and its members, who make up over 12,000 healthcare professionals and span over 100 countries, work to promote standards of care in obstetrics and gynecology through postgraduate medical education and training, publication of clinical guidelines and reports on aspects of the specialty and service provision. RCOG’s Global Health Unit also works with other international organizations to help lower maternal morbidity and mortality. Organizing the conference to share the expertise of RCOG members, 17 of whom are present in Qatar and count Sidra Medicine physicians among them, supports Sidra Medicine’s goal of making medical education accessible to colleagues throughout the region.

“We are excited to welcome this prestigious organization to the region and look forward to a robust dialogue around some of the topics most pertinent to women’s health today, including infertility management and prevention of cervical cancer,” said Sidra Medicine’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joachim Dudenhausen. “By partnering with RCOG, our popular Sidra Medicine Symposia Series has taken on an element of prestige as we bring an expert panel of specialists from all over the world to share their expertise with colleagues in Qatar. We are hopeful that attendees to the event will take away key learnings that they can apply to their medical skills and experience.”

The three-day program will feature a series of special lectures, interactive panel discussions, hands-on workshops, interactive case studies and training courses. Over 30 international and regional experts will discuss topics ranging from patient safety to prevention of Cesarean sections, with high-profile attendees including:

  • Dr. Ziyad Hijazi, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Sidra Medicine, who will elaborate on Sidra Medicine’s future partnership with RCOG.
  • Professor Sir Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, President of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), who will share lessons learned about prevention of postpartum hemorrhage.
  • Professor Frank Chervenak, Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, who will discuss the importance of adhering to global patient safety standards.

Dr. Paul Fogarty, RCOG Senior Vice President for Global Health, said, “We are delighted to be collaborating with Sidra Medicine to deliver this conference, the first event of its kind to be held in Qatar. The RCOG is keen to build strong partnerships in the Gulf region and we want to understand the local needs and develop new training programs and links with countries in the Middle East. The upcoming conference will enable us to share expertise and develop new relationships, and I look forward to meeting fellow health professionals in the field of women’s health.”
