From the Neighborhood to the Clinic is a new community Women’s Health Conversation series by Sidra Medicine, in collaboration with Msheireb Museums. The Women’s Only series will be in Arabic. The first session will focus on Postpartum Depression.
Overview
Our understanding of women’s health is shaped by more than medicine. It is also influenced by the families and communities we grow up in, the experiences we share, and the beliefs and practices passed down through generations.
Inspired by the historic neighborhood of Msheireb, From the Neighborhood to the Clinic brings these inherited perspectives into conversation with the medical knowledge that we have today.
Through a series of women’s health discussions in a majlis setting, we explore what we have inherited that has shaped our beliefs, habits and lifestyles. The discussion will also cover the practices that continue to serve us, and how we can change our perspective and understanding to help address our health and well-being needs.
In the spirit of the majlis, each session brings a voice from the community together with a Sidra Medicine specialist for an open and respectful conversation.
Session 1: Postpartum Depression
Motherhood can bring joy, change and new challenges. Yet the emotional difficulties some women experience after childbirth are not always easy to talk about.
Mothers may hear that feeling overwhelmed is simply part of motherhood, that they should be patient, or that they should feel grateful. While some traditional practices offer valuable support, other expectations may make it harder for a woman to speak about how she feels or seek help.
In this session, we will explore what women have traditionally been told about life after childbirth, what current medical knowledge helps us understand about postpartum depression, and how partners, families and communities can better support mothers.
Together, we will reflect on the beliefs we carry forward, the misconceptions that deserve a second look, and the importance of recognizing when a mother may need support.
- Speaker: Noor Abdel Ghani, Mental Health Psychologist, Sidra Medicine
