Sidra Medicine Qatar Genome Program

The Qatar Genome Program (QGP) is a national initiative aiming to map the genome of the local population in Qatar. Announced by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation and Vice Chairperson of the Supreme Council of Health during the World Innovation Summit on Health (WISH) 2013, the Qatar Genome Program is currently in its pilot phase (http://www.qatargenome.org.qa).

QGP is managed by the Qatar Genome Committee and incubated by Qatar Biobank. QGP uses a collection of samples and data from Qatar Biobank (QBB) participants to identify genotype-phenotype associations relevant to the Qatari population. QGP and QBB provide the basis for the development of personalized healthcare in Qatar.

Sidra Medicine has a major role in the QGP and QBB actions, including sequence production, data analysis and storage, and research activities on several QGP projects.

National Biomedical Informatics Center

Biomedical Informatics Department within Sidra Medicine Research has acquired a sophisticated, High-Performance Computing (HPC) system specifically for Genomic and Biomedical Research applications. The Department has also developed unique expertise in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics in order to analyze big data arising from genomics and other omics projects. This has facilitated not only clinically relevant research in Sidra, but also nationally important large-scale programs such as the Qatar Genome Program. Recognizing the pivotal role that Sidra Medicine Biomedical Informatics plays in Qatar, it has been established as a “National Resource”.
