Precision Medicine & Functional Genomics 2018 (PMFG 2018)

Dates: 8–10 December 2018
Venue: Doha, Qatar
CME/CPD: Accredited Group Learning Activity (Category 1 – 22 Hours)
Theme: Big Data to Clinic

Overview

Precision Medicine & Functional Genomics 2018 marked the fourth annual edition of Sidra Medicine’s flagship genomics conference. Held under the theme “Big Data to Clinic,” the symposium focused on translating large-scale genomic data and multi-omics discoveries into actionable clinical applications.

PMFG 2018 brought together internationally recognized scientists, clinicians, and researchers to explore how genome sequencing, biobanking, disease modeling, and systems biology can accelerate precision medicine — particularly in maternal, pediatric, and rare diseases relevant to the region.

Conference Themes

The program was structured around three main day-themes:

  • Human Genomes and Big Data
  • Modelling and Treating Disease
  • Mother and Child Health

These themes reflected the progression from genomic discovery to functional validation and ultimately to clinical implementation.

Program Highlights

PMFG 2018 featured sessions covering:

  • National and international genome initiatives
  • Population biobanks and translational research
  • Long-read sequencing and multi-omics integration
  • Functional genomics approaches in organoids and animal models
  • Rare disease genomics and pediatric precision medicine
  • Gene and cell-based therapeutic innovations

A dedicated Women in Science workshop highlighted leadership, mentorship, and career development for women in biomedical research.

The conference also emphasized Qatar’s genomic landscape, including updates from the Qatar Genome Project and research addressing diseases prevalent in the Qatari population.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the conference, participants were able to:

  • Identify diseases that may benefit from genetic diagnosis or precision medicine
  • Describe examples of targeted or advanced therapeutic options
  • Recognize disorders relevant to the Qatari population
  • Understand how large-scale genomic datasets can inform clinical decision-making

Scientific Impact

PMFG 2018 reinforced Sidra Medicine’s commitment to advancing precision medicine through integration of genomics, functional biology, and translational research. By connecting global expertise with regional priorities, the conference strengthened Qatar’s position as an emerging leader in population genomics and personalized healthcare.

The 2018 edition further demonstrated how genomic research, when aligned with clinical excellence, can transform prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies for future generations.
