This leaflet will provide you with information about Pre-Septal Cellulitis causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and home care advice.

What is a Pre-Septal Cellulitis?

Pre-Septal Cellulitis is an infection of the eyelid and the skin around the eye, not involving the eyeball or deeper tissue.

Common causes of Pre-Septal Cellulitis include:

  • Insect bites
  • Injuries around the eyes
  • Nearby skin infection

Your child may express some changes in the skin surrounding his/her eye like:

  • Warm skin around the eyes
  • Uneven swelling around the eyes
  • Pain when touching the area
  • Redness or color changes in the skin around the eyes
  • Sometimes facial pain may occur

The doctor will ask about your child’s health and examine them. They may decide if further blood tests or other tests are needed. If there’s a suspicion of a deeper infection, your child might need a CT scan to see how far the infection has spread.

Treatment options may include:

  • Oral antibiotics to treat infections
  • Pain relief medicines to alleviate pain
  • Cold compresses or ice packs to help reduce swelling around the eye
  • In some cases, your child may need to stay in the hospital if they cannot take oral medicines

Take your child to the nearest Emergency Department if:

  • He/she are unable move their eyes in all directions comfortably
  • He/she becomes drowsy or less active
  • Symptom are worsening despite taking the medicine (increasing swelling, spreading infection, or persistent headaches)
  • Fever increases even after taking the medicine for two days or more
