How to Care for Your Child with a Pre-Septal Cellulitis

What is a Pre-Septal Cellulitis?
Pre-Septal Cellulitis is an infection of the eyelid and the skin around the eye, not involving the eyeball or deeper tissue.
Common causes of Pre-Septal Cellulitis include:
- Insect bites
- Injuries around the eyes
- Nearby skin infection
Your child may express some changes in the skin surrounding his/her eye like:
- Warm skin around the eyes
- Uneven swelling around the eyes
- Pain when touching the area
- Redness or color changes in the skin around the eyes
- Sometimes facial pain may occur
The doctor will ask about your child’s health and examine them. They may decide if further blood tests or other tests are needed. If there’s a suspicion of a deeper infection, your child might need a CT scan to see how far the infection has spread.
Treatment options may include:
- Oral antibiotics to treat infections
- Pain relief medicines to alleviate pain
- Cold compresses or ice packs to help reduce swelling around the eye
- In some cases, your child may need to stay in the hospital if they cannot take oral medicines
Take your child to the nearest Emergency Department if:
- He/she are unable move their eyes in all directions comfortably
- He/she becomes drowsy or less active
- Symptom are worsening despite taking the medicine (increasing swelling, spreading infection, or persistent headaches)
- Fever increases even after taking the medicine for two days or more
