Program Overview

Perinatal and Reproductive Mental Health Fellowship Program (PRMH) is a structured educational experience following the completion of 48 months of Graduate Medical Education (GME) specialty training program in general psychiatry. The subspecialty training fellowship in PRMH will typically last 12 months.

The PRMH program integrates the following ACGME Competencies into the curriculum, such as Professionalism, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, and Systems-based Practice.

Goals and Objectives

The mission of the Women’s Mental Health Division of the Department of Psychiatry at Sidra Medicine is to provide comprehensive psychological and psychiatric care that are personalized to meet the unique mental health care needs of women, paying particular attention to reproductive behavioral health, including pregnancy and after birth,  and psychological support for those going through reproductive endocrinology and infertility treatment- covering a broad range of psychiatric disorders and conditions that can compromise a woman’s sense of health and wellbeing as follows:

  • Provide compassionate patients’ care to the highest standards under the appropriate level of supervision while fulfilling the training and educational requirements of the PRMH.
  • Learn the appropriate indications and possible complications of treatment modalities; pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions; including the risks and benefits and probable outcomes of treatment and non-treatment options for women in the perinatal period with mental health needs.

Overall, the program aims to provide the PRMH fellow with a well- rounded learning experience in both clinical, leadership, teaching and research.

Clinical Training and Key Rotations

The fellows rotate through Women’s Mental Health Service Outpatient Clinics focusing on the Perinatal Mental Health and Reproductive Psychiatry Patients (9 months of the 12 months will focus mainly on this) including outpatient clinic- preconception counselling, antenatal clinics, pregnancy planning, birth planning, postnatal clinic, complex prescribing and acute care and inpatient consultation liaison.

There will also be an opportunity to spend a month each in NICU working with mothers of children with complex needs, obstetrics service and the reproductive endocrinology and Infertility service.

Fellows will also develop skills in psychotherapy (CBT, Counselling, Infant and maternal attachment work etc.) under supervision of psychologists. In addition, fellows have protected time for weekly didactics and participate in psychiatry grand rounds, journal clubs and case conferences. It is expected that the fellow will undertake a small piece of research or service improvement project during their 12 months. The program follows ACGME-I guidelines for duty hours.

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of an ACGME-I accredited or equivalent residency training program in General Psychiatry.
  • Board certification in core specialty (Psychiatry).
  • Hold a valid Medical License or be eligible for licensure in Qatar (click here for more details).
