Dr. Yosra Mekki

Dr. Yosra Mekki is a medical doctor and quant who is interested in treating sports injuries, especially those of the hand and upper limb. She also builds digital solutions to improve athlete health. She studied at Qatar University School of Medicine and gained clinical and research experience at places like Aspetar, Hamad Medical Corporation, Sidra Medicine, King’s College London, Mayo Clinic, Harvard Teaching Hospitals, and Cambridge Hospitals.
Dr. Mekki is an award-winning extended reality (XR) developer and leads Qatar’s national AI and XR healthcare network. She is the first communications fellow at Nature Digital Medicine and hosts their podcast.
She has created VR apps about antibiotic resistance and AI tools to help screen for COVID-19. She has spoken internationally, including at the International Olympic Committee conference, led an AI journal club, and taught a medical AI course at Qatar University. Her projects include work with Aspetar, the Football Association, and Mayo Clinic on athlete health, AI, and aerospace medicine.
She completed a fellowship at Mayo Clinic’s STR-X program and was a visiting student at King’s College London at the Quinn NASA Lab. She is also the research lead at the Clinician Engineer’s Hub at Cambridge.
Dr. Mekki finished her MD in April. She plans to focus on healthcare innovation in sports medicine and hand surgery. She is a Google Tech Makers Ambassador and serves on the editorial board of NPJ Digital Medicine. She reviews articles for The British Journal of Sports Medicine and Springer Nature. She has co-written many book chapters and articles on medical AI and XR, serves on scientific committees, and has organized workshops and entrepreneurial events internationally.
