Pediatric Emergency Resuscitation Program 2023

The Pediatric Emergency Department at Sidra Medicine is hosting the 8th Pediatric Emergency Resuscitation Program on 19 January 2023.

The simulated-based program will provide an opportunity for healthcare professionals to practice the management of acute pediatric emergencies, including medical and trauma resuscitation of critically ill children.

The program will be led by a highly trained clinical team of senior pediatric emergency medicine experts including nursing leaders and educators. It will be delivered as a combination of interactive lectures and simulation-based sessions, offering a chance for hands-on practice alongside the professional facilitators followed up with a comprehensive debrief.

This course is very different from APLS and PALS course, and will give candidates the opportunity to take a leadership role in the resuscitation of acute emergencies under the supervision and guidance of a facilitator. The course will follow the latest updates and evidence-based guidance for managing acute pediatric resuscitation.

Please note there will not be any assessment during the course. The goal is to develop critical skills and effective team behaviours in a safe, constructive environment that will enable healthcare professionals to provide better patient care within an emergency setting.

The program is an approved CPD activity from the Ministry of Public Health with Category 1 and 3 points.

Overview

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which falls on 11 February every year, is an important observance endorsed by the United Nations, to promote the full and equal access and participation of females in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields.

QPEM - Pediatric POCUS (Pediatric Point-of-Care Ultrasound)

Overview

Sidra Medicine Pediatric Emergency Department team has successfully conducted several Pediatric POCUS courses over the past three years with excellent feedback. This 2-day interactive practical workshop will guide the clinician to gain the required knowledge and competence in pediatric point-of-care ultrasound.
This is a QCHP-approved CME activity with Category 1 & 3 points.
The use of point-of-care ultrasound in the Emergency Department is now the standard of care and is recognized as a significant element in the emergency medicine board training in Canada and the ACGME training programs in the US.  Clinicians at pediatric institutions are expected to be able to provide this point-of-care bedside standard.  

Conference Objectives

By the end of the course, applicants can:

1. Describe how physics relates to ultrasound image acquisition and processing.
2. Apply methods of ultrasound image acquisition.
3. Identify the indications for the use of ultrasound in pediatric emergency cases.
4. Recognize the relevant, focused findings and pitfalls associated with using ultrasound in decision-making.

Breastfeeding Workshop

Overview

The International Breastfeeding Week occurs every year from 1 to 7 August. Organizations and institutions around the world celebrate this week to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding. Sidra Medicine celebrates this week annually in many different ways. This year, the aim is to conduct an interactive breastfeeding workshop for the mothers form the community.

Zebrafish Models to Boost Research in Rare Genetic Diseases Workshop

Overview

Sidra Medicine Zebrafish Functional Genomics Facility, employs a platform of assays that merges the gap between clinical presentations and genomics findings in rare pediatric hereditary disorders presenting a roadmap toward precision medicine. Earlier diagnosis of rare diseases means earlier intervention and potentially saving a life. With the latest scientific developments, the zebrafish model offers hope that this diagnostic odyssey could be cut short (sometimes from years to mere weeks), with the missing piece of the puzzle uncovered and leading to a sound diagnosis.

Zebrafish, a unique vertebrate model with high throughput phenotypic capacity, present a compelling alternative to other model systems given their high fertility, large breed size, small larvae, rapid development, and transparency. Disease clinical presentations are compared against the established zebrafish characteristics of genetic similarities, cardiovascular and neurological development, and function of swimming, vision, and auditory. Zebrafish has the power to visualize molecular processes by live in vivo imaging of genetically encoded fluorescent reporters, and immunohistochemical stains. Zebrafish small size makes drug screens accessible to identify molecules protective in disease models, a further application for human rare genetic diseases  therapeutics.

The workshop is offering a hands-on experience demonstrating state of the art platform of zebrafish assays in precision medicine. Presenters will describe the zebrafish model applications and their critical role in deciphering the underlying mechanisms of rare genetic diseases and innovative therapeutic solutions.

World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology & Cardiac Surgery: PICS- AICS, Washington, DC

Overview:

Sidra Medicine will participate in the Annual Pediatric and Adult Interventional Cardiac Symposium (PICS). PICS is one of the most significant cardiac symposia dedicated to the latest breakthroughs in treating patients with congenital and structural heart diseases.

PICS will focus on the latest interventional catheter strategies for congenital and structural heart disease in children and adults. It will spotlight technologies in devices such as implantable valves, stents, balloons, and other approaches.

The program will include daily live case demonstrations from Cath labs at Sidra Medicine (Qatar), Dante Pazzanese Instituto de Cardiologia (Brazil), Children’s National (USA), Nationwide Children’s Hospital (USA), Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital – University Medical Center (Netherlands), Toronto General Hospital (Canada), CHOP (USA), NYP/Cornell (USA), Seattle Children’s Hospital (USA), ST Paul’s Hospital (Canada).  In addition, there will be daily taped cases performed by master operators from India, Japan, Korea, Mayo Clinic, Milan, and China - featuring detailed discussions of the cases with technical “how to” tips.

PICS will also feature special didactic sessions discussing the closure of septal defects of all types, percutaneous valve implantation & repair; stents; hybrid techniques; and much more.
