Paul Newland is a Consultant Clinical Biochemist in Clinical Chemistry within Sidra Medicine. He is clinically responsible for the delivery of biochemistry services including point of care and aims to support the development of Pathology services to meet the needs of the patients and clinical teams.
After studying in Liverpool and graduating in Biochemistry in 1984, he spent several years as a research biochemist before entering his career in Newcastle as a Clinical Biochemist in 1988. In 1996 he moved into Paediatric Biochemistry in Manchester and then joined Alder Hey Children’s hospital in Liverpool in 1998. He was awarded a consultant post in 2002 and became Director for Pathology in 2004, a position he held until his departure for Sidra. During his time at Alder Hey he took on the role of Head of Biochemistry and was the Director for Newborn screening services. With a keen interest in quality he was also a peer assessor for the UK screening programmes sponsored by Public Health England.
Latterly his managerial role was extended further and in 2010 he was appoint Clinical Director for Clinical Support services, leading and supporting over 700 staff within that Clinical Business unit.
Academically, he gained a Master of Philosophy in 1988 and his Fellowship to the Royal College of Pathologists in 2000 and has been actively involved in research, coauthoring over 40 peer reviewed publications.
He has been actively involved nationally taking on varied roles within the Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine (ACB) and was an executive member of the ACB from 2013 to 2018.
