Professor of Pediatrics adj., University of Ulm, Germany

Dr. Hummler graduated in 1986 from the University of Tübingen Medical School, Germany. After one year residencies in Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Germany he undertook his training in Neonatology from 1992 to 1995 under the guidance of Eduardo Bancalari, M.D. at the Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics, Jackson Memorial Medical Center, University of Miami, Florida, U.S.A. His research activities at JMH were mentored by Tilo Gerhardt, M.D., Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory at the Univ. of Miami/Division of Neonatology. His main research interests were the physiological effects of patient-synchronized mechanical ventilation of the neonate.

In 1995 Dr. Hummler returned to Germany and joined the staff in the Division of Neonatology and Pediatric Critical Care, Children’s Hospital, University of Ulm, Germany in 1996, where he became Chief of the Division in 2005. He became Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in 2002 and graduated and received his M.B.A. in 2006 from the University of Applied Sciences, Neu-Ulm, Germany. In 2006 he became Professor of Pediatrics, and in 2008 Vice-Chairman of the Dept. of Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital University of Ulm. Dr. Hummler joined the faculty at Sidra Medicine in 2017.

His research interests are related to neonatal pulmonology, lung injury, mechanical ventilation, and permissive hypercapnia. More recently his research focused on the effects of hypoxemic episodes in Very Low Birth Weight Infants as measured by pulse oximetry and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), and he was involved in the development of a mechanical ventilator capable of using automated closed-loop feedback of FiO2 and other ventilator settings to stabilize gas exchange in preterm infants.

Furthermore, he led a group of researchers studying the effects of permissive hypercapnia on lung injury and on different interventions in neonatal resuscitation in experimental settings. His group is actively participating in many international trials mainly related to his research topics of interest, and he has published more than 120 original articles in peer-reviewed journals and editorials and book chapters. Dr. Hummler started a quality initiative to focus and avoid risk factors for Intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in preterm infants and was able to show that a cooperative effort of a core team of obstetricians, neonatologists and nurses can lower the incidence of ICH and improve patient outcomes dramatically. His neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Ulm, Germany has had excellent results for extremely low birth weight infants for many years with the highest survival rate in 2015 nationwide. He received the Scientific Award of the German Society of Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care and was awarded as a Top Physician in Neonatology in the years 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Dr. Hummler has been and is a member of several national and international scientific committees and foundations and is a frequent peer-reviewer for more many pediatric and neonatal international journals. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Society of Pediatric Research, Pediatric Academic Societies and the European Society of Pediatric Research. Dr. Hummler served as an invited speaker at more than 150 national and international meetings and postgraduate courses and is a frequent speaker of the IPOKRaTES international organization of postgraduate medical education.
