Sir Murray Brennan

Sir Murray Brennan is an international cancer surgeon and leader in cancer research. He is currently the Benno C. Schmidt Chair in Clinical Oncology, Vice-President for International Programs, and Director of The Bobst International Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York.

Sir Murray was bestowed the title of Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to medicine in January 2015. The title is the highest honor given to New Zealand nationals by Her Majesty the Queen of England.

Sir Murray has lectured throughout the world and authored or co-authored more than 1,000 scientific papers and book chapters, as well as two books on soft tissue sarcoma. He is a spokesperson for Global Cancer Care delivery. He has served as Director of the American Board of Surgery, Chairman of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, President of the Society of Surgical Oncology, Vice President of the American College of Surgeons, President of the International Gastric Cancer Association, and President of the American Surgical Association, the oldest and most prestigious surgical association in the United States.

In 1995, Sir Murray was honored with membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and in 2000 he received the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) highest award, the Distinguished Service Award.

He has received multiple honorary degrees and honorary fellowships, including those of all the Royal Surgical Colleges.
