Her Excellency Dr. Ghalia bint Mohammed Al-Thani
Health Chairperson for the Clinical Steering Planning Committee and a Member of the Board of Governors
Her Excellency Dr. Ghalia bint Mohammed Al-Thani is Chairperson for the Clinical Steering Planning Committee and a Member of the Board of Governors at Sidra Medicine.
In addition to these titles, H.E Dr. Ghalia is also the Chair of the Board of Governors for the Ministry of Public Health Qatar; Consultant Pediatrician at Hamad Medical Corporation; Co-Chair of the Joint Advisory Board at Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar and the Chair for the Qatar Foundation for Child & Woman Protection.
H.E Dr. Ghalia has held several key leadership positions in the health sector in Qatar. IIn 2005, she was appointed as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Health Authority in Qatar. She was also appointed as Minister of Health for the State of Qatar until 2009.
H.E Dr. Ghalia qualified as an MD from the University of Jordan in 1987 and went on to specialize in pediatrics in London where she attained her MRCP (UK) in 1992. She was elected as a member of the British Pediatric Association in May 1995 and Elected as a Fellow of the Royal College for Pediatrics & Child Health (FRCPCH) in March 1998.
H.E Dr. Ghalia later went on to sub-specialize in pediatric gastroenterology and established the pediatric G.I and Hepatology section at the Hamad Medical Cooperation where she continues to practice till today. She also held the position of pediatric department chair for nine years from 1996-2005.
H.E Dr. Ghalia began working in the social sector in 1998, when she became a committee member and later Chair of the Committee for People with Special Needs. During her time with the committee, the world famous Shafallah Center for children with special needs was established. She later became Chair of the Committee of Childhood which belongs to the Supreme Council of Family Affairs. She also Chairs the Qatar Foundation for Child and Women Protection.
In 2001, H.E Dr. Ghalia was elected to be a member of the UN committee on the rights of the child. She was re-elected with the highest number of votes in February 2005.
