Dr Jithesh has over 20 years of R&D experience, with more than 15 years in Bioinformatics. Prior to joining Sidra, Dr Jithesh was Head of Bioinformatics for the Oxford Translational Molecular Diagnostic Centre at the University of Oxford. He was also a member of the Congregation of Oxford University and held honorary appointments with the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics and the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. Here he worked on establishing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies for routine diagnostics and rare disease genetics as well as pilot phase of the UK 100,000 Genome Project.
Dr Jithesh obtained his Masters Degree in Microbiology in 1994 and initially worked as a researcher and lecturer in various institutions in India including All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He then moved into the field of Bioinformatics in 1999 by completing an Advanced Diploma in Bioinformatics with merit scholarship from Government of India. He started his Bioinformatics career at the Indian Institute of Technology, soon moving to the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing to work on Bioinformatics applications on High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. In 2003 he joined Queen’s University Belfast, initially working with the Belfast e-Science Centre and later with the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology. Here he worked on Grid computing projects such as GeneGrid and CancerGrid as well as translational Bioinformatics work involving analysis of microarray gene expression, machine learning and pathway analysis. He also earned his PhD in Bioinformatics from Queen’s University Belfast.
At the University of Liverpool, he led the Bioinformatics team for the Liverpool Cancer Research UK Centre and worked on several Cancer Bioinformatics projects including the Pancreatic Cancer Genome Sequencing project. He was also a co-founder and Director of the health informatics company, HealthIntec (2008-2012).
Areas of Research/Activities
Dr Jithesh is Principal Investigator in Translational Bioinformatics and leads the Bioinformatics Core. The group provides Bioinformatics expertise to investigators within Sidra as well as other institutions in Qatar. Several types of data from high throughput technologies such as next generation sequencing (NGS) including targeted panels, exome sequencing, whole genome sequencing, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq etc. are analysed using custom-built and optimized open source software pipelines and commercial software on a purpose-built high performance computing (HPC) system. Collaborative projects vary in objective and analysis and include diagnostic genomics, rare diseases, complex diseases, population genomics, metagenomics etc among others. A major undertaking is the analysis of whole genome sequencing data from the Qatar Genome Program aimed at sequencing the whole Qatari population in the country.
