Sidra’s biomedical research efforts have been forward-funded and will be underway years before the facility opens its doors to its first patients. The research component of the medical center reflects Qatar’s desire to develop an expertise in this field and to contribute to the creation and dissemination of scientific knowledge on a global scale.

Research will be conducted in partnership with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, Hamad Medical Corporation, and other local and renowned international healthcare and research institutions. The initial areas of focus of the Sidra biomedical research program will be:

  • Diabetes Research: to gain insights into the population-specific pathophysiology of diabetes that will aid efforts to develop better treatment strategies, including the prevention and control of the juvenile diabetes.
  • Cancer Research: to expand our knowledge of cancer biology to help improve the quality of care of cancer patients through developing new therapeutics.
  • Clinical Research & Epidemiology: to build an internationally competitive & collaborative clinical trials portfolio in the fields of obstetrics, childhood diseases, diabetes and cancer that will help take novel diagnostics and therapeutics from the laboratory into clinical practice.
  • Foeto-Maternal Health: to use modern, sophisticated genomic technology to improve all areas of foeto-maternal health.

Sidra research programs will be supported by several core sciences and technologies which are: biomarkers platform technologies, functional and anatomical imaging, stem cell coregenetic, genomic and proteomic, bioinformatics and tissue management systems.
