Dr Shumway trained at Columbia College of Physician and Surgeons with a joint degree in Medicine and Public Health in 1988. After medical school he went to Beijing China to work for the WHO for a year from the United Nations. He helped to launch their nationwide Mammography Screening Program based on work he had performed while completing his Public Health Degree. He then returned to Residency at UCLA and Fellowship in MFM at Johns Hopkins.
Post MFM fellowship he was recruited to St Louis where he has practiced academic medicine at St Louis University Washington University where is functioned as a medical professor and surgeon from 1995 to 2011. He is an ACOG trained Residency Program Director.
He has always been clinically engaged and has performed 19,000 vaginal births, 8000 C-Sections and lectured extensively on obstetrical emergencies and pregnancy complications. His extensive breadth of surgical, medical, obstetrical and sonographic experience is extensively documented with documented clinical RUV’s at the 93-95% for all of his years of clinical practice.
He has continued to use his public health training with various health and education projects in Nicaragua, Mexico, Israel, Peru, Turkey, Vietnam, Cambodia Palestine, and China. His former resident trainees and fellows reside worldwide in 14 countries.
Prior to coming to Sidra in 2014 he served as the Professor and Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Vice-Chairman of the Department of OB/Gyn at the academic teaching hospital of St Elizabeth’s in Belleville IL. In that role he also served as the director of Perinatal Services for the HSHS health system comprising of 23 hospitals in the States of Illinois and Wisconsin. He continues to seek to improve medical care locally, regionally and internationally.
Currently, Dr Shumway is the Medical Director of Simulation in Obstetrics and Gynecology for Sidra. He also works on the Credentials Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, and is the Chair of the Medical Executive Policies and Procedures committee. He is clinically active in the teaching of all years of the Weil Cornell Medical College and with additional teaching responsibilities at HMC, Women’s Hospital, and Al Wakra Hospital.
