David Richard Thomas, MA, MB BS, FRCP(C) is a Royal College of Canada certified Dermatologist, currently serving as a Sidra senior attending physician in the Division of Dermatology. He received his medical sciences training at Cambridge University, UK in 1975 and spent his clinical training at the Westminster Medical School, Hospital, London UK, graduating in 1978. He moved to Vancouver, Canada in 1985 after qualifying as a General Practitioner in the UK.
He received his Dermatology training at the University of British Columbia and graduated 1988 as a fully qualified Dermatologist, registered at the Canadian Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. He then established a private Dermatology Practice in Vancouver Canada. He built his practice to become one of the busiest Dermatology practices in British Columbia, over the last 25 years. The patients were all referred from practicing family doctors. The clinic regularly accommodated medical students, family practice residents as well as dermatology residents. Most of the patients were seen for medical concerns. Patients of all ages were treated. A small minority would come for cosmetic concerns. Surgical intervention for skin cancer became a sizeable part of Dr. Thomas’ practice in the latter years. He also used lasers for over 20 years. In 2003 he established and directed a Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit within his Dermatology Practice which was fully active until his departure to Doha in 2015.
A keen teacher, Dr. Thomas was an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia and served as Director of Dermatology, University of British Columbia, Student Health Clinic 1992-1994. Throughout his career he frequently gave rounds, talked to local physicians and became a partner and organizer of the largest Dermatology biannual meeting in Canada, called Dermatology Update. He is the founder of a patient based Dermatology website called www.skininformation.com. He established and became founding director of the Dermatology Society of British Columbia and was the president of the British Columbia Medical Association Section of Dermatology in 1996. He is the Editor of the indexed publication Skin therapy letter.
He joined Sidra Medical and Research Centre in 2015 and is now a Senior Physician in the Division of Dermatology. While at Sidra he will be responsible for the care of dermatological problems in Children and Women.
