Asim Belgaumi graduated from the Aga Khan University Medical College, Karachi, Pakistan in 1989. After completing an internship at the Aga Khan University Hospital he proceeded in 1991 to the United States where he joined the Pediatric Residency Program at University of Texas, Houston. Between 1994 and 1997 he completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. He subsequently joined King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center as an Associate Consultant in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. He was promoted to Consultant in 1999 and appointed as Head, Section of Leukemia/Lymphoma in 2002 and remained in that position until 2013. Between 2004 and 2013 he was also the Director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Central Data Unit. In 2012 He was appointed as the Vice Chairman for the Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. From 2012 to 2014 Dr. Belgaumi was also an Associate Professor at the Al-Faisal University in Riyadh. In September 2014 he moved to Qatar as the Deputy Division Chief, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Sidra Medical and Research Center; he is currently Interim Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, an Associate Professor in Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornel Medical College – Qatar and is visiting Associate Professor at the Aga Khan University in Karachi.
Dr. Belgaumi has been actively involved in clinical and translational research and has authored over 40 manuscripts published in peer-reviewed international journals. He also has co-authored a book chapter and has presented 64 research abstracts. While his main interest lies with the biology and treatment of pediatric leukemias and lymphomas, he is also keenly interested in development of research tools and infrastructure, and supportive and palliative care for children with cancer.
