Surgical pathology where clinical specimens are sent for macroscopic and microscopic examination, to diagnose a disease process. This includes placentas after delivery, tumors and small biopsy specimens.
Cytopathology where individual cells, usually in a fluid are stained and examined under the microscope. This includes cervical screening and fine needle aspiration specimens.
Autopsy, where an examination is carried out with parental consent, if a fetus, baby or child has died, to try to understand why this has occurred.
